Mulate’s offers a lively New Orleans atmosphere, generous portions, and excellent value!
I debated between four and five stars because the atmosphere was definitely five-star, while some of the food could have used a little more kick for my personal taste. However, once I considered the generous portions and how packed every dish was with shrimp, sausage, meat, beans, and other goodies, I decided Mulate’s deserved the full five stars.
I ordered the Taste of New Orleans sampler, which included gumbo, jambalaya, crawfish étouffée, and red beans and rice. The jambalaya was the most flavorful item for me, and I appreciated that the dishes were filled with ingredients instead of being mostly rice. These were substantial portions, and I believe two people could share comfortably depending on their appetites.
I also ordered the New Orleans-style barbecue shrimp and grits. The grits were very good, and there were plenty of large shrimp. I expected the dish to have more sauce, so I requested additional sauce, which made it even better.
Now, Mulate’s house cayenne pepper sauce was awesome! It was flavorful and provided exactly the extra kick I was looking for without overpowering the food. It truly helped bring the flavors to life.
Be sure to ask for the French bread because it was amazing—warm, comforting, and very New Orleans. It is not automatically placed on the table, but it is absolutely worth ordering.
Since I was dining alone, I sat at the large bar. The bartender was not rude, but he seemed completely drained and gave off a bit of a “please hurry and order because I’m busy” feeling. Everyone can have an off day, though, especially during a hot New Orleans afternoon.
The restaurant itself is spacious, lively, and filled with New Orleans character. I was told they offer live Cajun music regularly, which would make the experience even more festive.
As an excellent cook myself, I can be difficult to impress when dining out, and I personally wanted a little more seasoning and depth from a few items. Still, the portions, quality ingredients, delicious hot sauce, atmosphere, and overall value made this a worthwhile experience.
Five stars for a fun New Orleans setting and plates that are truly packed with goodies… located across The way from the convention center it’s a great location! And it didn’t take very long to get the food either. Clean bathrooms! Y’all know what I say about a clean bathroom means that kitchen is probably clean too! 😂
