The lady who answered the phone was so rude and non helpful. I was looking for immediate shelter and she acted like it would kill her to tell me where I could go. I asked about housing and she said it would take a year, I informed her I still wanted to apply so I could at least get started or in it and she basically didn’t wanna give me any information. She said when they rode around at a certain time if they saw me on the street they’ll pick me up and help, that’s it. No to mention, one of the shelters told me they had no beds and I informed her. She called them after n said they told her I can come in, I explained to her I knew that, BUT the lady at that shelter said they only had a couch and twin size mattress in their mixed area, and since I’m 22 and 7 months pregnant, and they don’t do back ground checks, she really didn’t want me to go because she didn’t have any beds at the time and felt it was unsafe for me. When I explained this to the other lady, she just kept saying, “well they said you can go in, we don’t know who does and doesn’t have beds.” Her attitude was just so nasty.

I was given a list of places from Hano of New Orleans that offer services for shelter or housing for mothers on the streets and got nowhere. It's a disgrace how this city treats citizens who are homeless and living hand to mouth or have fallen on hard times. I would like to know why these organizations have people in charge who aren't helping anyone and telling citizens that if they don't call back and check daily, their cases may be lost or thrown away. It's also a problem that these organizations are not open to the public as they should be. New Orleans is getting ready for Saints season and the Super Bowl, sweeping the French Quarter, adding lights on the bridge because they don't want visitors to see what's not taken care of, while homelessness is at an all-time high. This city could care less while pocketing government/state funding.

First and foremost, I'm thankful Unity helped house me and my children. However, the journey was not easy. There's a lot of miscommunication. A lot of misplaced paperwork. But most importantly, I think the person who runs this program could stand to be more professional in her dealings with vulnerable clients. I understand the mission, unfortunately, I think they've lost focus on the compassion.
